MOLLE II Fight Load Carrier
MOLLE II Fight Load Carrier
A major goal of the MOLLE program was to replace, specifically, the aging ALICE system that had been in use by the US military since the Vietnam war. The ALICE system relies on a traditional combat belt supported by simple suspenders to carry the ammunition and basic gear a soldier needs. While an improvement over its predecessors, the ALICE system was quite similar to those in use since the World Wars in many ways, and in the face of innovative designs and concepts coming out of China and the war torn insurrections of Africa, it became apparent that the US would need to adapt as well. After over a decade of R&D and trials, the MOLLE II Fight Load Carrier was born.
The "FLC" is both a simple and deceptively complex solution to the problem of distributing the weight of a lot of readily accessible equipment comfortably, and in an incredibly light weight and modular package. While it still incorporates a belt, it is integrated into a vest comprised of highly durable nylon and breathable mesh. The belt allows the wearer to adjust the size of the rig to nearly any width and a broad range of lengths, so whether you're just a smol guy or a little big boned, the FLC can easily be adjusted to fit comfortably. This is also advantageous if you want to fit your load out over the top of a flak jacket or plate carrier. As with the rest of the vest, the belt is also completely saturated in PALS webbing, giving you significant real estate along your hips and lower back for the near limitless amount of MOLLE or after market pouches which exist, all while keeping your back almost completely uncovered by fabric for maximum breath-ability and the wearing or packs, rucks, and hydro bags.
The main advantage of a load bearing vest over the ever popular chest rig is that it allows you to carry significantly more items, dispersed over a wider area, resulting in a minimal increase to felt weight. With a chest rig, all weight is concentrated in a relatively small space at chest level. This can become a hassle when going prone, and if you aren't careful and manage to overload this space, the lack of counter weight will put constant pressure on your back leading to pain and potential injury. The vest, coupled with the modularity of PALS, means you can build out a full fledged battle jacket for long range patrols, or a small combat corset for lighter duty. All of which can be donned and doffed in literal seconds with the aid of a front mounted YKK zipper.
If a chest rig IS what you're after, then the FLC can still find a home with you. The belt portion of the vest is actually its own separate piece, attached by an adjustable harness in the back and small brackets in the tube like pockets where the belt resides. When disconnected, this belt can be spun around into Sport Mode for a frontward orientation, revealing straps and a fastex buckle to secure the rig in the back and negating the zipper entirely. This opens the opportunity for a more centered placement of pouches in the front across the zipper, and making size adjustment much quicker for placing over armor or winter jackets, at the cost of less capacity and weight distribution. And if you wanted, the whole belt can actually be completely divorced from the rig and worn by itself as a much more affordable battle belt. Even with suspenders if you're going for a weird retro-futuristic look.
Whether you're fishing/hiking, putting together a GWOT impression, or into serious preparedness, there's no reason not to own one of these utilitarian marvels.
